They say that the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. For over three-quarters of my life, I have been fortunate to have writing and running as two constants in my life. I would guess I have run well over a thousand miles. Much like running, the journey to becoming a published writer begins with the first words on the page.
If you’re a writer or a runner or both, you know that each requires discipline, routine, and the biggest thing “showing up.” When your feet first hit the pavement, it takes a few minutes to settle in before you can no longer hear your own breathing. This is much like when you first sit down to write and you stare at a blank screen until somehow your fingers are flying over the keyboard and the page is filled.
I believe transformation happens slowly and mostly when we aren’t looking. Over the years, the miles I’ve run have helped me to build physical stamina, which I compare to the rigor of writing my 80,000-word Women’s fiction novel. In a way, running has been preparing me for my next step: publication, an arduous process that requires persistence and stamina. I just have to keep putting the next foot forward to find out what comes next.
Whether you’re a writer, a runner, or a reader, I hope that together through this blog we can share a few words and miles together and see where they lead us.
Thanks for joining me on my journey.
Where the rhythm of the run meets the meets the rhythm of the page.
